Album Review

And so to a great re-release by 'ATTRITION'. Martin Bowes gives us the re-release of his 2004 extravaganza 'Dante's Kitchen' a wander through mankind's thoughts on God, Hell and a whole lot more.

The first track 'Andante' begins with a very gentle and evocative string refrain before drawing us to a precipice of suspense only to disappear and end... It's a nice introduction to the album as 'Dante's Kitchen' then gets straight down to business with a hard driving, infectious beat and some interesting sound effects. The vocals are low and threatening with a very effective soprano line from Julia Waller running across it and coupled with an unexpected American voiceover it's a really great track. The third track 'The Head of Gabriel' returns to the more mournful sound of the first track but with a good infusion of the great beats and awesome soprano we heard in the second. Lyrics are dark and disturbing and the whole track emits a strange sort of disquiet that I find I really like.

'Two Gods' has the most gorgeous string dirge as a beginning, more great operatic backing and emotive and provocative lyrics murmured to a deep perfection. 'The Ladder' is a more upbeat track rhythm wise but still harbours dark overtones whilst 'Dream Catcher' is a little indulgent and arty for my taste but that may just be in comparison to the tracks that have gone before it which are pretty much without fault. 'Feed the cow' is back on track for me, being far heavier and deeper with a nice disturbing overlaid sound effect which drags mournfully on. 'The long Halol' begins with the interesting thought “If language has no value, how do we ever pin down meaning?” Lyrically it takes it from there, and although not my favourite track of the album, I do like the thought put into the lyrics.

'Crash' starts like a slow ebbing heartbeat and gives a true sense of demise in its very brief existence. Like 'Andante' I find it a surprise, but as ever with ATTRITION's work such a good one. The bonus tracks are largely remixes of 'The Head of Gabriel' all done with considerable ability. The odd man out in the bonus tracks is Sveldt's recreation of 'Dante's Kitchen' which is pretty damned good. It's an excellent album and one which I've found myself listening to repeatedly. Recommended!
