Album review

‘ENOERAEW’ is a collaboration album of the experimental sound and performance group BLACK SUN PRODUCTIONS and BAHNTIER, an Italian project that could perhaps be best described as electro-industrial that leans heavily on industrial metal but also on dance, especially break-beat. The different backgrounds of the projects are reflected on the album: 'Veneration X' mixes computer sounds with chanting while the groovy background in 'We Are Here' brings in mind the Bristol sound and 'Chemism (Dysphoria mix)' has a pulsating bass line reminiscent of old-school EBM.

In a Virgin Prunes cover ‘Sweet Home under White Clouds’ a chanting choir, backed only by a subtle drum and bright bell sounds, takes a ritualistic twist to the original. Chanting and recitation also have a prominent role in title song 'ENOEWRAEW', which is also perhaps the best synthesis of the two artists’ music on the album. The characteristic computer sounds on ‘Smell Undefined’ make it more modern, IDM-like, but the chanting is back in 'Uncle Billy (His Sperm mix)'. Here, human voice is used also as an instrument and at times is so heavily processed it's hard to distinguish it from synthesizer sounds. Sinister bubbling of ‘Homoccult’ is followed by another instrumental track, ‘Interlude’, and funereal yet soothing ‘Don't Stand at My Grave and Weep’. The album ends with the mellow ‘Summer of 1969’, another instrumental track with folky tunes and airy flutes.

The performance and lyrics are theatrical, absurd - and openly homosexual throughout the album. While some of the theatrical performance can be conveyed through the recording, these elements are for the most part missing. Visuals and performance have been part of BLACK SUN PRODUCTIONS from the beginning and there’s no denying this music is best enjoyed live.
