Interview with

Justin Furstenfeld of Blue October

The story of BLUE OCTOBER started out in 1995 when Justin Furstenfeld's former band THE LAST WISH disbanded. The first album under the BLUE OCTOBER moniker 'The Answers' took off in 1998 then. Two years later they inked a deal with major label Universal for the release of the second instalment 'Consent to Treatment'. The album didn't sell as good as planned and Universal terminated the deal early.

The song 'Somebody' from their third album then brought the band back to Universal after whose release the band went on tour for 18 months. Rolling forward to 2009 the band released their fifth album 'Approaching to Normal' which spawned e.g. the single 'Jump Rope', being one topic of this little interview we've conducted with Justin.

Reflections of Darkness (RoD): Did you write and release the song 'Jump Rope' as a single to become so successful in general and in radio especially? It gets played in German radio for weeks and weeks now.
Justin: When you write songs, do you pay attention to if they are good songs for radio or not? I wrote this song for my 3 year old daughter. I don't think about radio when I write.

RoD: The new single will be 'Should Be Loved'. Why has that track been chosen to be the next single?
Justin: It's one of my favourite songs on the new album. I was really glad when it was chosen as the next single.

RoD: Maybe you can give us and our readers a little background information on the track?
Justin: I want the listener to have their own thoughts about the song. I don't want to take away what it means to them.

RoD: How did that collaboration with FRND.de & FRND.tv come into being?
Justin: That came through our label rep Tim at Universal. I think he really understands what we're all about. The message that Friends for Life is trying to get out there is very important to us. Back home we have tours that help promote mental health issues and suicide prevention. We're doing a press conference on Capital Hill in Washington DC on our next tour to help bring more media attention to how many people need help. Too many people don't know where to get help with their depression and are afraid to say they have thoughts of suicide. We want to let people know they're not alone and that people care.

RoD: Is there anything special planned for the live shows?
Justin: Excited to see the new faces at the shows and to see how they react to the music. I like meeting new people after our shows.

RoD: That's all for now. Anything you'd like to add?
Justin: Come see us. Thanks for the interview.
