Album Review
CANCER BATS are a Canadian hardcore band, who began as a trio and nowadays consist of four members. They were founded in 2004 and have just released their third studio record. ‘Bears, Majors, Scraps and Bones’ opens up with the song ‘Sleep This Away’, a straight forward yet interesting and diversified song, I especially found the main guitar riff to be rather catchy. The vocals are used in the typical hardcore way, also the in the genre frequently used breakdowns are included. The following song, ‘Trust No One’, continues in a fast way, although some grooving elements can be heard as well as varied vocals. ‘Dead Wrong’ has a remarkable chorus at its deposal, which is surely suitable to shout along during a live gig.
At this point I already realized that CANCER BATS must be an ordinary hardcore band, since their songs did not sound (at least to me) just like a bunch of riffs and breakdowns with some undifferentiated screaming. Their songs are surely not repetitive and pretty entertaining. What the hell is a ‘Black Metal Bicycle’ supposed to be? That’s what I first thought when I read this title in the playlist. After having listened to this song I still cannot answer the question, but CANCER BATS are definitely not veering towards black metal. ‘We Are the Undead’ is a more chaotic and fast song, whilst ‘Scared To Death’ provides some clean vocals.
The following one, ‘Darkness Lives’, begins pretty slowly and continues in a comfortable mid-tempo. ‘Make Amends’ and ‘Fake Gold’ are fast, neck breaking songs, whilst ‘Raised Right’ again starts at a rather slow pace. The last song, ‘Sabotage’ serves as a nice last dance with an interesting bass phrase throughout the music. All in all, CANCER BATS managed to create a unique and self-contained record, leaving their mark in the hardcore scene. Fans of the genre and fast music should really give this band a try.
