Single Review

The release of the second conceptual phase of INTERLACE with the name ‘Imago’ already dates back to the year 2004 and for a long time I thought the Swedish artist collective had secretly disbanded but then two new tracks surfaced on MySpace one of which titled ‘Nemesis’ which is now going to be released as a limited single. It leaves absolutely no doubt that INTERLACE still is a force to be reckoned with. A heavy mechanic din shifts into reality and announces the first track on this little EP to be joined by gritty old school-loops and a parapet of saturnine sound waves builds up just a few spells before a gunfire of savage beats tugs you off your feet. The voice of Oscar Wilkenson goes right through you with manic whispers always with a rabid quivering and unbridled outbreaks “Your faith / Your Poison / Under my skin” after the track suddenly explodes with a fierce industrial complexity. The vocal performance is once again absolutely stunning and proves yet again that Wilkenson is one of a very few vocalists capable of capturing and transporting the very essence of aggression with his voice without using distortion effects.

Besides the original cut, ‘Nemesis’ appears o the disc in three variations that couldn’t be more different. The first one called ‘Exner Analysis’ kicks off with sort of a marching drum section firstly underscoring the main melodic motif until morphing into a clap/beat combination increasing in density as the chorus arrives. Another characteristic of this version is its utilization of glitching effects. ‘Nemesis (Tetanus)’ opens with little harmless sequences and then unfolds a massive beat like an electronic abstraction of a ritualistic percussion section. The only contribution from an ‘outsider’ comes from an artist called v01d and is really an extraordinary rework that lies on a cascade of interlocking and shifting down-tempo rhythms and soundscape networks.

What can I say, I’m glad that there’s finally a new official output of INTERLACE that displays they’ve not lost a single bit of their creativity and intensity in this long time of hibernation. Now I’m just hoping that the third album won’t be long in coming.
