Album Review
KAMELOT is a melodic metal band that was formed in 1991 by guitarist Thomas Youngblood and drummer Richard Warner. Only three years after the band came together they hit jackpot and got signed for their first record ‘Eternity’ which they released in 1996. 1997 saw a first change in the line-up when singer Mark Vanderbilt was replaced by former CONCEPTION singer Roy Khan and Richard Warner was replaced by Casey Grillo, together with the new members the band created the record ‘Dominion’. Only one year afterwards the third album saw the light of day.
1999 the band returned to the studio and brought ‘The Fourth Legacy’ into being. The year 2001 saw yet another new record of KAMELOT named ‘Karma’. One live album in 2006 and many gigs later they dealt out ‘Ghost Opera’ their 8th studio album. 2010 appreciated the arriving of KAMELOT`s 10th studio album ‘Poetry for the Poisoned’. On 21st of April 2011, Roy Khan left the band due to health issues and was replaced by Tommy Karevik. So, today in the year 2013 I have the mission to review their newest work ‘Silverthorn’ that was already released in 2012. After sighting the available material, including some abominable promo pictures, I shuddered before starting the listening session… but hey the music itself is not bad at all!
Okay I am not too fond of female vocals at all and opera style vocals in generally but hey it is not an overdose (which is a nice thing). The whole record doesn`t match my expectations (which were horribly low). I was expecting Italian style power metal with keyboards and a way more epic approach, but KAMELOT (aside from promo pictures) are doing much properly, the vocals are pleasing, the overall musical approach is upper class instrumental wise and the compositions are a good job most of the time. This band or the genre of melodic metal will never be my scene but it is not painful to listen to this record so if you like melodic metal like RHAPSODY, EPICA, NIGHTWISH or CONCEPTION just stop reading and buy this record now!
