Album Review

SUBSCRIBE, one of Hungary’s biggest names in Heavy Metal that was formed in 1999, is back with ‘Bookmarks’. What differentiates them from the next door metal band is their style; or in order to be more accurate their diffusion of styles. In ‘Bookmarks’ the band moves with ease between, 70’s Progressive Rock, classic Heavy Metal, Death Metal, ballads, and they show a firm grasp of orchestrated melodies, and Jazz solos. The result is not a patchwork of styles but you get the feeling that the variations are organically intertwined in their music; that it is not a show off of artistry.

The opening ‘Griping Portentous’ is a classical inspired orchestration in order the ‘...Act II’ to start with a Death Metal tone then to move to Power Metal and Progressive Metal aspects in order the ‘...Act III’ to open with something that sounds like SUICIDAL TENDENCIES and to proceed to A PERFECT CIRCLE. If you have to pick another specific song that will show the almost schizophrenic variations of styles that would be ‘Gay Rodeo’ in which Metalcore and Jazz co-exist with soft Rock -almost Pop rock - characteristics and all that in the first 2 minutes (out of 6). SUBSCRIBE show effectively that the distance between madness and genius is shorter than expected.
