Album Review

QUANTUM DUB is one of three projects around the musicians Christian Weber and Andy Drabek. Furthermore, they’re working as Quadrophone DJs and are a considerable part o the band UR, but their career started with the remixes, always with the anxiety to deviate from the usual schemes. Over the years, they built themselves quite a reputation in different scenes and in 2006 started working on their very first Remix compilation ‘Quantum Dub - The First Mix’ which saw the release of its second issue in this year’s October.

With the first track on the compilation ‘Karma Planet’ we get to hear one original track from the aforementioned band UR. ‘Karma Planet’ unfolds its strength with the combination of eclectic minimalist - sounding rhythm sections that could as well have been created in the 80s and speaking of that: Also the solemn melodies spread the flair of this praised era. As next one we’ve got a track DEPECHE MODE fans should know very well: It’s ‘Stripped’ and on their take of the song they’ve at least contained the spirit and basic rhythm of the original track while re-constructing everything else around, incorporating wave-ish guitar sounds and dissonant synth lines that work really well in the context of that remix. Only the vocal lines - I think - are not that strong. ‘You Mean Everything’ is one new perspective on the track originally conceived and performed by DISTAIN!, one of Germany’s bigger names in the electronic pop genre. The pervasive mood - which is accented by subtle pads, an omnipresent hovering piano melody and carefully injected guitar - is for the most part created by Alexander Braun’s distinct vocals and it sounds like 80s again.

‘Cause I Do Believe’ originally by the French band WAITING FOR WORDS brings in a melancholic mood that is purposely building up slowly to unfold completely in the chorus. It’s at this very moment when you’re entirely carried away by it. The UR remix of ‘Aus der Traum’ by OBSC(Y)RE draws from a pool of various samples to create one stream of abstract rhythmic layers out of it, being the fundament for an intense ominous atmosphere realised with sustained synth layers in the background. In case anyone doesn’t know what the Tripods are: It’s a series of written novels by Samuel Youd. The story revolves around a post-apocalyptic scenario. Humanity has been conquered and enslaved by "the tripods", unseen alien entities that travel about in gigantic three-legged walking machines. The theme you get to hear here is descending from the TV series, produced by the BBC and airing in the mid 80s. Mostly that track is working with mid-paced, muffled beats to accentuate the overall atmospheric approach. About halfway through the track, the rhythm section turns into faster, tech-minded beat with a throbbing synth pulse accompanying it.

Let me just say, that I hope that won’t be the only compilation of that kind. I think those are really good works that have their own charm and should get the chance to be heard by more people. Check out the MySpace profile for some samples.
