Album Review

Classically trained Leif Bloomquist always had an interest in computer-based sound generation and in 1992 this resulted in the creation of the virtual band SCHEMA with which he released the debut ‘Geosynclical Law Enforcement Satellite’ in 1995. The album was well received. In 200 came with ‘Exorage’ the second instalment receiving significant exposure and radio play in Canada and the United States on campus and community radio stations. In 2002 the name was changed to SCHEMA FACTOR in order to be differentiated from a new commercial band SCHEMA. ‘Redux’ now is his fourth release to date.

Beginning with one original track, carrying the name ‘High Voltage’ which instantly turns out as a club smasher with it pounding, sometimes distorted rhythms and sequencer loops. IN a long run this is going to get pretty tedious to listen to – at least for me. The ‘Savage’ Remix of the track ‘Discharge’ is pretty much on the same page as its predecessor. Only that the beats have much more power and the sequences are high-frequent and scissoring at times. The overall feel of the track comes close to the one that old-school industrial tracks from the eighties have, still it’s too monotonous for my tastes. ‘Nachturnal’, here in a remix of INFECTORITY SIMPLEX spices up the whole thing a little and presents us some tech-minded industrial break beats blended with guitar samples and fast-paced loops, pushing every devoted dancer to the max. The ‘Each turn all’ remix by ZUG ISLAND is quite the opposite of the aforementioned for most parts, basing on very minimalist pattern, and sounds almost like cold wave at times. I said for most parts, as every now and then the track kind of freaks out and is transiting into a frantic drum’n’bass inferno, only lasting for a short moment every time it appears. The ‘End of the World’ as its presented here is accompanied by an ominous aura and heart-piercing screams, while an eclectic fidgety rhythm is running through it.

My conclusion of ‘Redux’ is not overly positive as I think that – even though it has its moments- it lacks diversity inside the tracks. I admit I don’t even know most of the originals, so all I can judge is the remixes, but even the originals I heard were no epitomes of diversity at all. But not all is bad. Definitive highlights among the remixes are the ‘Nachturnal’ variations and the collaboration with GROK! On ‘End of the World’.
