Album Review
Italian post-punk quartet THE TRANSISTERS this year produced the sophomore album entitled ‘How to Irritate People’ yet in my opinion this title does better for the band’s previous effort because the new release is definitely more qualitative and somewhat mature. The opening song attacks your ears without warning and the music starts dinning into your head. But a bit later the melody takes shape and becomes more or less peaceful nevertheless the clear-cut rhythm remains till the end of the composition. Actually rhythm may be regarded as one of the advantages of the album and as for the vocals it’s hard to assess such manner of singing which is mostly meant for fans of the style besides the voice is often drowned by the instruments. Speaking about the band’s style it seems to be a mixture of already mentioned post punk and some electro rock elements with the accent on synths so sometimes there appear associations with formations playing the similar genre in the end of 80s and the beginning of 90s. Indeed energetic and simple riffs in ‘Walking on a Black Hole’ remind me a lot about Russian rock band KINO which was popular at that period of time.
‘Confuse -a – cat’ starts with very mellow keys and in whole the song turns to be rather tuneful especially comparing to the rest of the material and pleasant to listen to. I’d like to mark out a couple of the compositions that must be the best one at least in my opinion, namely ‘The Minister of Silly Walk’ and ‘Ultraviolet on You’. The letter pleases with its instrumental beginning while the other tracks are not bad at all but there are many repetitions in the lyrics and the monotony of the melodies just doesn’t impress much, I’m afraid. If it all was about one or two compositions then it would be okay and the guitars, the rhythm sections really did a great job but unfortunately some moments don’t vary a lot from one song to another yet the guys obviously have enough potential to create something striking.
