SENORE MATZI ROSSI after three albums and many concerts are releasing a trilogy of singles (online), they come under the title of ‘Vier Geschichten von Geistern, Mädchen, Elefanten und Schildkröten' (aka Four Stories of Spirits, Girls, Elephants and Turtles) and herald the next LP, this is the review of the EP1. For a listener bereft of knowledge of German, the translated title can already suggest that the songs are concerned with stories plucked out from imagination but Matze talks also about memories and experiences alike. Musically, it is very German Pop-Rock-ish which might suggest that it is very melody driven (which it is), and with Punk thrown in for a good measure.
The second song ‘Das Mädchen, die Rettung der Welt und ich’ (The Girl, the Rescue of the World and I) was the highlight for me. There was something of FUGAZI there; clean sound and the feeling of good story-telling, the guitars, drums and the vocals seem to be most in intuitive harmony, under the banner of a wholesome energy. Altogether it’s a pleasant single, its lively feel gives to a listener a sense of fun indeed but maybe it’s more enjoyable if one can understand the lyrics as musically it hasn’t transcended generic sound enough – it just doesn’t stand out as distinctive and unique for it to be memorable or mind-blowing. In that respect, one can only give thumbs up for earnestness and solid effort. Some music can get over itself, sounding as many others out there already by playing live and going to their concert might elevate it above the average by one’s direct participation.
