Wacken Open Air Day 1: Alice Cooper, Mötley Crüe, Iron Maiden
To say that Wacken Open Air is a legend is an understatement. Go to any corner of the globe and ask a metal fan which is the greatest festival on earth and they're all likely to reply WACKEN. Starting way back in 1990 humbly enough with a small attendance to showcase German bands, SKYLINE has the honour of being the first band to ever grace the Wacken stage. How very different it is now with over 85,000 visitors and 70 bands spread across 4 massive sound stages. If you've never been, it's hard to imagine the sheer scale and lunacy of it, because not only is it large it's madly good fun as well, with people of every nationality imaginable, drinking and wearing silly costumes of incredible complexity. For three days I chased around the arenas watching a truly great array of bands and exhausting though it was it could hardly have been better.

M’era Luna 2010 Day 2 Main Stage: Placebo, In Extremo, Editors, The 69 Eyes, Saltatio Mortis, Zeraphine, Hanzel und Gretyl, Punish Yourself, The Other, Expatriate
After an extensive breakfast, I made my way back from the hotel to the festival ground for some extraordinary bands scheduled for that day. I was of course looking forward to see PLACEBO headlining the main stage but there was much more to offer, in parts pretty uncommon bands most attendees probably did not even heard of, namely PUNISH YOURSELF or HANZEL UND GRETYL. Pretty weird stuff! With EDITORS, the festival had another favourite of mine to offer. The day started with EXPATRIATE, a band I already knew from the last PLACEBO tour and that impressed me pretty much…

Faith And The Muse
FAITH AND THE MUSE inarguably are one of the most diverse bands the common Goth Rock and Dark Wave scene has to offer. Though it would be a bit of a limitation to pigeonhole them into these two genres only! Their influences range far beyond the boundaries other bands wouldn’t dare to cross. Folkloristic, electronic, even neo-classic elements have found their place in this sound cosmos, FAITH AND THE MUSE started cultivating since being brought to life in 1994. With their newest album ‘:ankoku butoh:’, released in 2009, 6 years after the last one ‘The Burning Season’; Monica Richards and William Faith once again set the bars high both in musical and visual ways. FAITH AND THE MUSE Live was Monica Richards (vocals, instruments) William Faith (various instruments, vocals), Paul Mercer (viola), Julia Cooke (taiko drums), Steven James (guitar), Marzia Rangel (bass, violoncello) and Geoff Bruce (drums). http://mercyground.com/ / http://www.myspace.com/faithandthemuse

M’era Luna 2010 Day 1 Hangar Stage: Crematory, Eluveitie, Rotersand, Das Ich, Brendan Perry, Faith And The Muse, Illuminate, Ignis Fatuu, Leandra, Sons Of Seasons
The Hangar program of the first festival day was more guitar influenced. Just ROTERSAND and DAS ICH were holding the electronic flag high. With FAITH AND THE MUSE and BRENDAN PERRY, the Hangar also had two high-class bands to offer. QNTAL, who also were planned for the Hangar, had to cancel on short notice and IGNIS FATUU filled the gap. As always, the Hangar was a bit problematic; during several bands it could not take the crowds wanting to see the show. So, during ROTERSAND and DAS ICH, lots of people did not get admission to the hall anymore because it was already too crowded…
