Punk has often been declared dead, but as we know from countless stickers on leather jackets: it isn’t. The Grunge scene is experiencing a revival as well, and a piece of evidence where both genres meet is THE VIRGINMARYS. The Rock duo was founded in 2009 in the otherwise rather tranquil town of Macclesfield, England. Fun fact for those who didn’t know: the place was the hometown of JOY DIVISION’s frontman Ian Curtis. In this respect, a place steeped in history. Musically, THE VIRGINMARYS are known for powerful guitar riffs, driving drums, and distinctive, raw vocals carried by intense emotion. A blend of melodic directness, aggressive force, and honest attitude. The duo consists of singer and guitarist Ally Dickaty and drummer Danny Dolan. The latter reminded me of drummer ‘Animal’ from The Muppet Show when I saw the band live.
The band’s debut album, ‘King of Conflict’ was released in 2013 and was awarded “Editor’s Choice” by iTunes US following their songs ‘Bang Bang Bang’ and ‘Just A Ride’, both being iTunes “Singles Of The Week”. It was then nominated for “Album Of The Year” at the Classic Rock Awards.
THE VIRGINMARYS have shared the stage with the likes of QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, SHINEDOWN, SLASH, and THE SISTERS OF MERCY, cementing their reputation as a rousing and passionate live act. Following their latest studio album ‘The House Beyond The Fires’ released in 2024 and accompanied by a successful UK and European headline tour, THE VIRGINMARYS are now opening the next chapter: in April 2026, they will return to the stages of Europe. With their unmistakable blend of energy, passion, and musical power, you can expect amazing shows - whether you’re a punk or not.
