Weststadthalle, Essen, Germany
10th February 2008
Diary of Dreams & Noyce TM

It was 26th October 2007 when every DIARY OF DREAMS fan had a big red cross in the calendar. The releases date of the recent album ‘Nekrolog 43’. After the band played a special acoustic set at the release parties in Munich and Leipzig, the tour ‘N43’ began on 10th January 2008 in Riga. Essen was the last of 12 German dates. So the German part found its end in the Weststadthalle, but it should be simply a great final show. For sure also a bit sentimental, because it was the last German show, but all good things will come to an end.

NOYCE™

After touring already with VNV NATION and FUNKER VOGT, the guys of NOYCE™ had now the honour to open the evening for DIARY OF DREAMS. NOYCE ™ was founded in 1997 after they published a few CDs under the name SILENCE GIFT, but wanted to try another musical direction and sound fresher. In July 1998 they have released the first E.P. CD ‘Panique’ on their own label “Focile Art Tribe”. With ‘Panique’ and also ‘I Bleed for You’, the band got their first club hits. In September, 1999 the first album ‘The White Room’ saw the light of day as well through “Focile Art Tribe”, followed by high positions in the German Alternative charts, different mixes for other bands like WUMPSCUT, PURWIEN or KLIRRFAKTOR. More releases came like the album ‘Coma/Ltd.Coma’ in September 2006, single ‘Mensch’ in January 2007 and ‘Our World in Coma’ in May 2007. The next album is ready to be released on 30th May 2008 and will be called ‘Un:welt’. http://www.myspace.com/noycetm / http://www.myspace.com/noycetm

Music
There were no guitars; just keyboard, drums and vocals framed with nice Synth-pop melodies, but also with a powerful beat. The songs were normally sung in English, but on the forthcoming album there will be also a German track called ‘Tagwerk’, which was also already included on the setlist and will be the first single release of ‘Un:welt’.

Performance
You could see that they had experiences in live performances already. Singer Florian was acting self-confident at the front while Oliver and Thomas were concentrated on their instruments. They played for about 45 minutes and performed ten songs. The audience seemed to like the music, but they didn’t get a huge applause. Anyway they seemed to have a lot of fun during this last show of their tour.

Diary of Dreams

After the change over the stage was ready for DIARY OF DREAMS who finished their current tour with this gig. DIARY OF DREAMS is a German electronic Goth and Darkwave music group. The lead singer and founding member Adrian Hates has produced most of the albums by himself or with minimal help from others. He rarely uses a full band, except when he is on tour. The early works ‘Cholymelan’ and ‘End of Flowers’ are both Darkwave albums. Shortly after the turn of the millennium, the music integrated more Techno and Future-Pop influences. The current album is called ‘Nekrolog 43’ and was released in October 2007. DIARY OF DREAMS are at the moment Adrian Hates (vocals, guitar), Gaun:A (guitar), D.N.S. (drums) and Taste (keyboard). http://www.diaryofdreams.de / http://www.myspace.com/diaryofdreams

Music
The set started by a spoken / whispered intro, followed by ‘Nekrolog 43’ the opener of the eponymous current album. The setlist consisted of several more songs taken from the current album, like ‘The Plague’, ‘Son of a Thief’ or ‘Hypo)crypticK(al’, mixed with older songs and hits like ‘She’, ‘Butterfly:Dance!’, ‘MenschFeind’, ‘Soul Stripper’ or ‘Traumtänzer’. The main set finished after about 85 minutes with the club hit ‘The Curse’. Of course the crowd requested an encore, which was given with three wonderful acoustic versions, followed by the finalising lullaby ‘She and her Darkness’.

Performance
At the start of the show five black clothed and hooded people were standing at the rim of the stage and spook the intro. First I had wondered about the 5th people because I knew that only four band member play on this tour, later I found out that Albert - the tour manager was the 5th person on stage and that it was a surprise for the band. Anyway, after the intro the band member shed the hoods and the concert started powerful with ‘Nekrolog 43’. Right from the start the crowd was infected by the powerful and strong performance; Adrian mostly in the centre of the stage behind his extravagant microphone stand bewitched the audience with his charismatic voice, Gaun:A the virtuosic guitar player dominated booth sides of the stage, sometimes on the left side, sometimes on the right side and D.N.S. and Taste played their  instruments dedicated in the background.

During the first songs Adrian did play the guitar as well, later he concentrated to the singing. The sound was simply great and the lightshow too, especially the sky full of sparkling stars background during ‘Traumtänzer’ and later on during ‘She and her Darkness’ as well. The well-filled venue was in a good temper, was singing and dancing along at the whole show and at the last song some sparklers were lighted in the crowd which gave a great effect together with the stars shining behind the stage. The first encore included three songs and was performed as an acoustic part with two acoustic guitars and keyboard. The second encore was performed only by Adrian and Taste and after it, all band members and the support band too came on stage to say goodbye.
