Album Review

THE CASUALTIES have always been known for their straight edge Punk sound ever since they began making noise in 1997. Over ten years later their sound is still fresh and enjoyable, just with updated production. Sticking to typical Punk style, the tracks are very brief and just bursts of anarchical noise, but each track has a story to tell. ‘Resistance’ hits hard with biting shouts backed by group vocals during the chorus and despite the basic collaboration of bass, drum, and guitar, the sound is incredibly vibrant. Here and there the band will toss in a few solos, but the focus seems to be on the main riffs that cement everything together. The gang vocal chorus is an excellent addition with how they drive with anthemic power that ranges from repeating words just to inciting listeners with nondescript chants. Other tracks like ‘Voice Of The Outcast’ feature a more mid paced churn and let the vocals take the focus with their lyrics while letting the instruments have a more basic structure of chugging, but at the same time it doesn’t lean to impress anyone drastically.

Of course, like most short track bands, after a while everything starts to seamlessly blend together and those who are not major lovers of the Punk genre may begin to tire of the music. Thankfully, THE CASUALTIES toss in a mix of opening with slow and fast tracks to try and keep listeners entertained for at least the first thirty seconds. Tracks like ‘It’s Coming Down On You’ are slow, almost Doom influenced with its opening on the guitars but the drums picks up and then everything explodes. The longest track- 5 minutes- has some of the best guitar work the band has to offer. ‘Corazones Intoxicados’ has an infectious groove to it with a bit of Spanish influence, aside from the title, which is sure to get a rise out of those who begin to tire of the typical CASUALTIES standard. While there aren’t too many moments like these (about 80 percent of the album is going to be just like the first track from the start) listeners can still enjoy the furious attitude. And for those upset at the way things are right now socially… well this is the album is the anthem to that rebellion.
