Album Review

Ever since the year of 2006, German HACKNEYED have managed to establish themselves as one of the younger bands in the Extreme Metal sector. Back then, all members were underage and after a demo, the debut ‘Death Prevails’ was put out in 2008. The band signed a contract with Nuclear Blast and played several shows in order to spread their word. In 2009, ‘Burn After Reaping’ was released and the newest effort now hits the markets in August 2011. After a small intro, ‘Raze The Curtain’ breaks loose and lines out the band’s typical style: brutal, straight-forward and yet modern Death Metal. Monotonous riffs are accompanied by breakdowns and guttural vocals – the drumming is used in an aggressive, yet technical demanding way.

The lyrics reflect a rather cynical attitude, criticism towards society and self-irony in certain matters.
Songs like ‘Magic Malignancy’ or ‘Damn (You’re Dead Again)’ stick out due to the felicitous combination of speed and groove. In general, all songs merge to a brutal yet enjoyable mixture - furthermore, ‘Carnival Cardvare’ includes no lowlights or fill- ins, since all songs are chosen and composed in a very powerful way. Solely the sound appears to be a bit weaker than on previous albums, which is probably a result of a lower budget. Yet, HACKNEYED really show that they are a band to keep an eye upon, since they still possess lots of capabilities. Fans of technical demanding and yet innovative Death Metal are not mistaken in giving this album a try.
