Album Review
GROUND TO DUST, an electronic duo from the USA, combines in its music industrial, EBM and Synth Pop elements, diluting them lavishly with some noise, ambient and classical sounds. Formed in 2007 as a project of paTrick, the band managed to release a seven track self-titled EP, made several live appearances and shared the stage with SEABOUND and DE/VISION. In 2009, GROUND TO DUST recorded the debut album ‘Everything Ends: A Cycle of Entropy and Regeneration’ which turned out to be rather interesting and not too complicated despite its pretentious title.
The first track, unobtrusive and quiet, doesn’t produce any strong impression and all the energetic surges are immediately stifled so they don’t break the monotony of the melody. On the other hand it seems like ‘Action’ prepares the ground for the following compositions which can please a listener with the powerful female vocals and intricate musical lines, maybe not very original but still impressive. In ‘pUrge’, the main melody first grows gradually gaining strength and then almost fades just to appear again supplemented with the pulsating rhythm. The song with German title ‘Zu Staub’ sounds as if it consists of two parts going almost simultaneously: melancholy calm passages alternate with slightly aggressive and strict ones that create a unique sonic picture.
The track “Complicate” is marked out with its leisured melody and vocals, slowly covering you but actually some vivacity may be noticed at the end of the composition. ‘Replicate’ may seem surprisingly positive and cheerful while ‘Whored’ irritates with the grinding sounds. One of most melodic songs on the record entitled “Isolate” is perfect to finish the whole thing and even to sum up all the ideas reflected both in the music and in the lyrics. So the album contains an explosive mixture of the diverse melodies that definitely suits the fans’ taste besides the tracks are just meant for having dance floors filled.
