Album Review
I remember the first time I watched Fritz Lang’s “Metropolis” and had to put up with Moroder’s awful score. It was, as we found out a bit later on, during the last years of the Cold War where the future looked promising in terms of dystopia. The years had passed by and Orwel’s “1984” showed its aging marks while the future wasn’t what it promised to be. Looking back, I don’t think that anyone could predict the current state of affairs. The underground culture, long salivating over the strict and rigid ordering of the society in order to acquire a meaning of life found itself bordering on the kitsch, wandering left and right (sometimes far-right), without being able to re-establish the neo-romanticism of an era long gone.
As such, the debut album of the MARI CHROME, is declaring its close affinities not only with “Metropolis” but much more importantly with the early 80’s, their dystopic optimism, the soft synth pop music, and the shoulder pads. It isn’t a tribute to a film; it is about a future that wasn’t there. It is certain that those who suffer from nostalgia will appreciate it more. As for the rest, though they will find it enjoyable - and especially the opening ‘Here I Am’ as well as the remakes of THE CURE’s ‘A Forest’ and NEW ORDER’s ‘Blue Monday’ - after a repeated listening they will appreciate Marion Aseema’s (ex INVISIBLE LIMITS) voice and the quality of production. Probably the limited double CD will compensate everyone.
