Album Review

In band’s years KILLSWITCH ENGAGE is seventeen, though the band rose out of the ashes of other bands (OVERCAST, AFTERSHOCK), came to prominence with their third album ‘The End of Heartache’ and has counted some successes within the mainstream, that is – bagged a Grammy, are often cited as best of American Metalcore bands and noted as part of New wave of American heavy metal. ‘Incarnate’ is their seventh album and second since their original vocalist Jesse Leaches had returned and replaced Howard Jones.

There’s a bit of quandary for me with this album, it’s a really good album but somehow it lacks something – it’s slightly on the too polished side so much so it’s lost too much of the grit and grip from it, it’s taken several listens to get engaged with it in a more meaningful way. Some of the lyrical output seems to be playing to teenage market, take ‘Strength of the Mind’ with its self-help empowering reach covering emotion management you should have mastered by the age of 18.  Considering that the clean vocals really have the American high school feel... bit of ‘no thanks’ on that point. ‘Embrace the Journey... Upraised’ stands out as it feels rawer. As a whole the band tried to diversify the sound a bit and that’s something to commend them on. Regardless of the few misgivings it’s a solid, interesting and an album for the band to be proud of to join their catalogue.
