Introduction

MICHIGAN was founded in the early 90s.They first started to write songs just for fun and didn't take it really seriously. In 1999 the boys decided to enter the studio and produced a demo, but nothing happened with it. The later came in contact with the Swedish label Memento Materia who invited the band to a contest, where the winner would end up with a contract. They were the lucky ones that won the contest and got signed to Memento Materia. Their already third album has the title ‘Pulse of Pain’ and was recently released.

Track Review

01. The Nomad - 4:37
'The Nomad' travels across the world no matter the costs, just to find this special person. This person is his light at the end of the tunnel, if you like. Maybe it is the person who could stop his endless journey and his desperate search .The song is very melodic, the whole time and Peter's voice varies between restrained and very powerful moments. 'The Nomad' is also the single which precedes the album.

02. Decadence - 4:18
“Do you believe in lord and his plan???” is a question asked in the chorus. Personally I can't believe that there's a higher entity that created the world and watches over us, but I respect the people who do. Everyone has the right to believe in what he or she wants. This topic is packed into a nice pop song with a catchy chorus and a quite danceable beat.

03. Juveniles - 4:34
A more familiar term for 'Juveniles' is Teenager. The song seems to deal with an event from the past of the protagonist. It obviously was a painful event and it took years to recover from that. Just some thoughts about the lyrics. 'Juveniles' is a great and dreamy pop song. I especially love the chorus when Peter raises his voice and creates a real magical atmosphere together with the airy synths.

04. Valley of Death - 5:00
'Valley of Death' could describe a desert, but it could also be a metaphor for a real bad time in somebody's life. When the future is uncertain and it looks like it never gets better again. Well I guess many people got through something like that, but those times pass and it gets better again. Maybe slow but constantly. All you have to do is: Have faith even if it's real hard sometimes. This is one of the calmer songs even though it has a strong and pounding bass line. The melodies in combination with the vocals immediately carry you away.

05. Hang on - 4:00
One person is captured in her sadness and another one tries to free her from this particular world. But it seems to be very hard to get her out of there and that's why the other person suffers so badly, but he has to hang on, even if it takes a very long time. The song really goes straight forward with its pumping beats and the rocking guitars, but it also has this lovely melodies and the strong hook.

06. The Gravity - 4:17
This song is by far the slowest on the album, but it has a real interesting rhythm, especially in the chorus that reminds me a little bit of folk, I don't know why. But folk usually isn't that dark in its mood. The fragile chant and the dense atmosphere created by the pads and synths only strengthen the impression of a real sad song and someone who really suffers.

07. Shine in Silver - 4:28
“Somebody told me that I was afraid to give all the love from my heart...” The person in this song maybe is just afraid to get hurt once again and therefore isn't able to fully trust someone else, so that he never has to go down that road again, but is he really willing to spend his whole life on his own??? 'Shine in Silver' is a rather fast yet dreamy song. I always get lost in my thoughts, when listening to this song.

08. Mysterious (Infected World) - 5:35
What I really like about this song is the drum programming. It has so much layers and the sounds change several times during the song. There's even a part without any beat where the mood of the song is only carried by Peter’s voice and the extended synth layers that accompany him. One of my absolute favourites on the album!

09. Love's a disease - 4:47
Love's usually a wonderful thing but I guess the person in this particular song had some bad experiences and therefore love feels like a disease for him. The whole mood and atmosphere of the song fit to that speculation. Dark and ambient-like atmospheres, a fragile chant and a not too dominant but nice drum programming are the trademarks of the song.

10. Demon's inside - 4:37
Everyone has those inner demons and we have to deal with them in every hour and day of our lives. Sometimes it's really hard to deal with them and we wish they would disappear right now and everything would be fine. But I guess it's this everyday’s fight that makes us what we are. That makes us human. The overall atmosphere of the song is rather dark. Peter's voice is surrounded by wide synth layers and pads as well as guitars. All that is accentuated by diversified but very laid-back beats.

11. Pioneers - 4:20
'Pioneers' starts with a sample of a preacher who quotes from the bible. Pads and some real deep bass effects appear a short time later to intensify the impression of the words that are spoken. In the further course of the track, another sample appears that sounds like a desperate prayer to god. The whole song is arranged very calmly with slow beats and the before mentioned pads and synth layers. Peter’s voice sounds very fragile this time

12. Pulse of Pain - 7:45
The title track of the album starts out very gloomy. Just some melodies and bass sounds. But as soon as the drums kick in, the song really starts. The vocal style during the verses is rather unusual and was a surprise, when I listened to this song for the first time. The vocals are very low and a little bit rough. That's a real nice diversion to the other songs, but there's also the cleaner style with its warmth and depth and the more powerful style in the chorus. After a short gap there's also a little instrumental hidden track.

Conclusion

MICHIGAN are back. The preceding single ‘The Nomad’ was already a hint of what to expect from the album. Well produced, highly melodic and diverse Synth Pop with a great voice. You can listen to the whole album without the need to put your finger on the skip button. There is simply no song that I would consider bad. Everyone has favourites for sure, but that doesn't tell much about the quality, it’s just a matter of taste. Peter's vocal performances on the album are remarkable. His voice really got better, much more volume and more depth. He really uses the full spectrum from his normal vocal style to deep and also fragile. One can hardly complain about that. What I missed was a real ballad like ‘The Sirens sounds’ on the album. But all in all it is simply a wonderful album.
