Album Review

There’s little known about this project. It’s based in South-Germany and it’s a solo project and that’s already everything. But as mysterious as this may seems, the musical preferences are clearer than crystal. When you listen to the tracks, you’ll get reminded of the old days when analogue sound synthesis was dominating the electronic music scene.

KRAFTWERK is a good example to give you a small hint on what you can expect the project to sound like. Very minimal sequences and analogue sound gadget await you and it’s completely instrumental. But now let’s start with the first track called ‘Retrogram’ which already makes very clear, where the journey goes with monotonous bleeping synth lines and the casual use of synth layers creating a haunting atmosphere. The next song ‘Renewal” flows in a similar vein but it’s a little bit more sped up and the synth layers had to make way spherical melodic dabs popping up occasionally. The song fluently fades into the third track ‘Gelb’ that welcomes us with what sounds a bit like an early form of percussion-like synths mixed with mixed with dark pads. A special thing about this track is that it’s building up layer by layer.

Once you get used to a certain sequence a new one appears and so on. After an excursion into the pulsating and bleeping ‘Audiomat’ the road leads into whole new territory. I don’t mean a sudden stylistic change, but the focus is set to a different element. Apart from the fact that both tracks ‘Headsequence’ and ‘Rhythm Cube’ have a playing time of almost eight minutes; it’s the focussing on atmosphere that makes them different from the others and two of my favourites on the album. Especially the ‘Rhythm Cube’ makes you think you’re standing in a desert at night, while an eastern melody is reaching your ears from afar. With the next four tracks we’re leaving the road of ambient again as those tracks re-emphasize on the monotonous sequences but don’t lack the right portion of (even if very minimal) melody before the last regular track ‘Kolophon’ ends the album with a quite layered track passed through with various speech samples and mixes it with an underlying current of danger. As a bonus you’ll find a remix of the track ‘Rhythm Cube’ which goes way deeper into ambient territory.

I never was and I’m still not a big fan of minimal electro but I was positively surprised by this release. I guess the big strength of it is that even though the monotony is obvious, you never sense it that way and that is something very special about this release.
