Album Review

PREY FOR NOTHING’s second effort, ‘Against All Good And Evil’, is a strong duality effort that still treads the Melodic Death Metal line. Opening with almost a four minute instrument of ‘Treachery’ before the snarling vocals come in, the song builds and builds like an excellent piece of older METALLICA, starting off with slow, single picked strings before getting into the more cohesive chords, and then it just explodes at one point. Following it is the first single ‘My Final Relapse’ which features heavy chugs intertwined with melodic guitar work in between with vocals that sound like they could either belong to THREAT SIGNAL or CHILDREN OF BODOM. The music is actually quite technical and fails to bore by not being repetitive at all. The brief instrumental ‘Unmake You’ is perhaps the most technical offering that the band has to offer, as it is all about instrumental ability as opposed to making a full song with the vocals included. However, fans may be slightly adverse to the following heaviness that is incited by the next three tracks as they rather tend to stick with the same vein of sound- opening slow or just ripping through without much through to brief, more melodic interludes. It almost sounds generic. The most melodic bit one can really get is from the other instrumental ‘Axis Mundi’ which features an excellent blend of both guitar and keyboard work (from a performer unnamed amongst the line-up) for a more symphonic structure.

“Turning Shears To Swords’ is where the band begins to bring more surprises. Just when fans think they might have the group pegged, this track throws in some backing clean vocals which sound almost choral and bring a whole new element to the band. Fans won’t really hear this again until near the end with ‘Against All Good’, a hybrid of Melodic Death Metal churnings and suddenly a very Progressive Metal sci-fi backdrop amongst acoustic guitar and almost Power Metal-esque vocals, which is a huge shock because it is nothing like anyone would expect from a band like PREY FOR NOTHING. The half and half of both sides makes this possibly the album highlight. On the other hand, the following “Against All Evil” is the opposite- downright direct Death Metal featuring actual growls instead of the mid paced snarls and less melody while focusing on just pile driving the guitars, almost with a Thrash based tone. Together, both these tracks epitomize how well PREY FOR NOTHING are good at balancing their elements, and also brings ‘Against All Good And Evil’ to the front of their discography as possibly being their best effort yet. Most Melodic Death Metal fans and even possibly Progressive Death Metal fans will enjoy this, if only for the two final tracks.
