Album Review

It’s always a bit weird to me, when I listen to a PERFIDIOUS WORDS album. The voice of lead singer Lars Rohnstock is that similar to the organ of DEPECHE MODE front man Dave Gahan. Thus, it’s necessary to remember that I’m not listening to a recording of the British Synth gods. No, it’s the Karlsruhe-based formation PERFIDIOUS WORDS! Since the beginning of the 1990s, Lars Rohnstock and Drazen Kostelac have been playing their Synth Pop together. Meanwhile, `Feel like me´ is the only third long-player. Besides the reviewed CD, it will also include an 80-minutes-DVD - a generous package every long-time fan (and in general everyone who likes wonderful Synth Pop gems) can be looking forward to. `Feel like me´ proves that PERFIDIOUS WORDS is much more than only a vocal duplicate of DEPECHE MODE.

I can’t get the sound of the opener `My Body’s Needs´ out of my head: Firstly, the lasciviously dirty vocals are sparely accompanied by the keys, but later on the track turns into a groovy and totally danceable chorus guaranteeing the pure catchiness. The second track `Another Day´ is also a real blast, but in a completely different way. Smooth and tender piano sounds introduce the melancholic song that could have been a piece written by COLDPLAY. By and by, it emerges to a highly dramatic and strings-driven mid-section. A feverishly pulsating intro invites me to listen to the third song `Hear me Calling´ that is rather restrained at the beginning, but finally turns out to be an anthemic Synth Pop piece with a catchy and solemn chorus. The first seconds of the title track `Feel like me´ lead me back into the DEPECHE MODE trap, as they are very similar to the introduction of `Clean´. However, the song’s character transforms into firstly cacophonic and nightmare-like lines that later on result in an aggressive Rock song.

I was very pleased by the variety and the fact that it totally corresponds in the album’s quality. Though the songs are pretty different, they sound like all of a piece. Besides the fantastic CD, the promising track list of the bonus DVD may be a further reason to buy `Feel like me´. Therefore, there’s nothing left to say but congratulations on recording an album like this, Mr. Rohnstock and Mr. Kostelac!
