Album Review
SINISTER is a Dutch Death Metal band who assembled in 1988, disassembled in 2004 and reassembled in 2005. Ever since, the band has released eight studio records, playing brutal death metal with American influences. Lyrically, themes such as Satanism, death or occultism are covered, depending on the singer.
With ‘Legacy of Ashes’, the band surely established a solid old school death metal record without compromises and including lots of brutal riffs. Singer Aad, who formerly used to play drums, possesses a great vocal volume and provides harsh growls yet without sounding monotonous. Occasionally, some melodic elements pop up, which add nice effects but do not prevail. There are no surprises in song writing or song structures. Highlights on the album are the title track ‘Legacy of Ashes’ as well as ‘The Enemy of My Enemy’ or the rather grooving ‘The Hornet’s Nest’ and ‘Righteous Indignations’. This album surely is not a breakthrough or an innovation, but fans of solid death metal are not mistaken of giving this album a try.
