Igorrr - “Distortion Tour 2023” - Support: Amenra, Der Weg Einer Freiheit, Hangman’s Chair

With 2017’s ‘Savage Sinusoid’, IGORRR proved himself as a unique musical force, a well-deserved reputation that really cemented after the release of ‘Spirituality and Distortion’ in 2020. IGORRR merges genres ranging from Death and Black Metal, to Breakcore, Balkan, Baroque and Classical music. This is done in a way that is as unconventional and unpredictable as it is exciting, and ‘Spirituality and Distortion’ shows an impressive width within both emotions and soundscape. “Getting stuck in only one emotion is very boring to me; life is a wide range of emotions - sometimes you’re happy, sometimes you’re sad, angry, pissed off, nostalgic or blown away,” says Gautier Serre. “Life is not only one colour. These 14 tracks are a journey through different states of mind I’ve been through.”

A strong influence was also traditional Eastern music, which is a prominent part of the album. “No idea where it comes from, but the colours of those sounds inspired me a lot. It’s something I’ve been extremely attracted to. Those sounds have a real depth in the emotional range, and combined with heavy music, it’s something which took me very deep into myself, and which pushed me into doing tracks like ‘Downgrade Desert’, ‘Camel Dancefloor’, ‘Himalaya Massive Ritual’ or ‘Overweight Poetry’”. By flying in specialist musicians, it was possible to achieve this vision, and despite a lack of confidence at the start, Serre was able to follow his instinct and see where the ideas led.

Support bands of the evening: AMENRA, DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT and HANGMAN’S CHAIR

AMENRA: Colin and the rest of the band have stated several times that their albums were born out of an accumulation of difficulties in their own personal lives. When they were working with De Doorn, however, there was nothing spectacularly disturbing going on. “It didn’t feel like a mass,” says Colin. “It’s a whole different thing. There’s a lot more storytelling, a lot more clean, acoustic parts, Caro is a big part of it too. Despite the Masses, we are not really a concept album kind of band. We just write and we never really know where it will end up. In this case, a lot of the music was written during the last two or three years, most of it was written in function of the fire rituals we did in our country.”

DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT: The Progressive, Avant-Garde Black Metal experimentalists, DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT, have been breaking the boundaries between genres since their formation in early 2009. With their fifth album, ‘Noktvrn’, the Germans expand the mind and perspective of their ever-growing fan base. This is in the same way that they push themselves through the entire album process. Fans have witnessed the band’s antics and development over a number of years, five albums, one EP and live recordings. DER WEG EINER FREIHEIT has existed and flourished during this time, but building beyond the self-titled debut was not part of guitarist, vocalist and mastermind Nikita Kamprad’s original plan.

HANGMAN’S CHAIR was formed in Paris in 2005 and is one of the most unique Rock-Doom bands today. They have found and fine-tuned their unique sound signature, somewhere in the crossroad between TYPE O NEGATIVE, LIFE OF AGONY and SISTERS OF MERCY, to name a few. Each album draws its strength and essence from the band members’ own life experiences, which they always write about with unflinching honesty. Whether it’s the loss of band members, overdoses or the difficulties of living in the suburbs of Paris. All the human emotions resonate in each of the songs, as they embrace the darkness and transform it into something beautiful, heavy and melancholy. After five studio albums and a handful of EPs, HANGMAN’S CHAIR are now relevant with their sixth studio album, ‘A Loner’. This is their first record released on the German label Nuclear Blast. The theme is loneliness in all forms, and the record has a clear imprint of what makes HANGMAN’S CHAIR music unique. It simply sucks you in from the first listen.
