20 Years NUCLEAR BLAST Festival

When it comes to Metal labels these days, one immediately thinks of the German label NUCLEAR BLAST. Founded in 1987 by Markus Staiger, it grew from a small mail-order to one of the most successful and widely respected major record labels in the Metal genre. NUCLEAR BLAST's main office is in Donzdorf, where they are still running a well-assorted mail-order, but the label nowadays also has subsidiaries in the United States and Brazil.

In its early days, NUCLEAR BLAST focused on Hardcore bands like AGNOSTIC FRONT; the label's first release was a vinyl compilation called ‘Senseless Death’ featuring US Hardcore formations like ATTITUDE, SACRED DENIAL and IMPULSE MANSLAUGHTER. As time passed, more and more bands from different Metal genres got signed, especially ones playing Melodic (Death) Metal, Grindcore, Power Metal and Black Metal. Very well-known bands such as NIGHTWISH, IN FLAMES, THERION, DIMMU BORGIR, SUBWAY TO SALLY, BLIND GUARDIAN, CLAWFINGER, SAMAEL or TIAMAT have been and are still being released by the German label.

This year, NUCLEAR BLAST celebrates its 20th anniversary, and on this occasion an extraordinary concert night will take place in the Schleyerhalle Stuttgart. The Canadian Death Metal band KATAKLYSM will open the small festival, followed by the German group EDGUY (Power metal) and the very well-known SUBWAY TO SALLY. The evening’s highlights will be the Norwegian Melodic Metal act DIMMU BORGIR and the Power Metal heroes from BLIND GUARDIAN. So this promises to become a night to remember.

Bands

KATAKLYSM
Only few bands can claim of themselves to be the driving force behind a new metal style. KATAKLYSM are one of them. Since their beginnings in 1995 and their breathtaking debut "Sorcery" to the point of classics like the 2002 release "Shadows & Dust", the canadians have managed to establish and develop a brutally crushing, extremely fast but yet melodic and sophisticated style: the Northern Hyperblast! With their current wrecking ball "In the Arms Of Devastation" KATAKLYSM have achieved leader status at the latest and have proven once again - just like good wine - that aging can be a good thing! Prepare for the Northern Hyperblast! http://www.kataklysmrocks.com/ (Source: http://www.nuclearblast-festival.de/)

EDGUY
With only the cosmos left to conquer, Germany's EDGUY demonstrate their staggering combination of the power of HELLOWEEN and the glam behind THE DARKNESS with their current album "Rocket Ride". The fresh and saucy spirit of EDGUY and their charismatic singer Tobias Sammet - live refreshingly fooling around - quickly earned them the reputation of one of the most entertaining live shows on the planet, replete with all kinds of on-stage antics. EDGUY are not only leaders in the revival of modern traditional metal; they've single-handedly refined power glam with talent, integrity, and sense of humour to spare! SUBWAY TO SALLY
The band from Potsdam, Germany, has been founded in 1990. During the band's history, from their first album '1994' to their latest regular one 'Nord Nord Ost', which was their greatest commercial success up to now, they have gone through some immense changes. Their style has developed from Folk-oriented Rock with English lyrics more and more to electronic instrumentation, nowadays and since their label change from BMG to Nuclear Blast again routing towards medieval Rock and some Metal elements are audible. The language they are using for their lyrics today is German without exception. In October, their fans will finally get the new stuff from SUBWAY TO SALLY, when their new full-length album is released. http://www.subwaytosally.de/

DIMMU BORGIR
'Dimmu Borgir' is the Icelandic term for "dark fortress" and is also the name of an impressing lava formation on Iceland. In 1993, the three Norwegians Shagrath, Silenoz and Kenneth 'Tjodalv' Akesson have founded a band of the same name. Their first sign of life was the 7" EP 'Inn I Evighetens Morke' (= 'Into the Eternity of Darkness') via Necromantic Gallery Productions in 1994. Developing their style from Black Metal on the first two albums 'For All Tid' (No Colour Records, 1994) and 'Stormblast' to bombastic, complex Melodic Metal compositions on the following ones, DIMMU BORGIR managed to become quite successful and could locate some of their newer recordings in the charts in different countries. But this evolution also brought them the label of playing 'Black-Metal-Pop', especially in the underground. While they had still used the Norwegian language on their first two full length albums, they took up the English tongue to reach a broader audience with their lyrics. http://www.dimmu-borgir.com/

BLIND GUARDIAN
Already founded in 1984, BLIND GUARDIAN knew very soon what there musical mission was. Since the year one the kings of Symphonic Progressive Metal have refined their sound with fantasy spirit, complex dynamics and innovative perfection. The well deserved success finally came in 1992 with the classic "Somewhere Far Beyond", continuing to this day with their current masterpiece "A Twist In The Myth". Over the years the lore of BLIND GUARDIAN's absorbing live performances was spread over the whole world and more and more fans of the ring bearers followed them through their by J.R.R. Tolkien inspired journey. Join them and be a part of it! http://www.blind-guardian.com/ (Source: http://www.nuclearblast-festival.de/)
