Review Flash

The sound of THE FLOWER KINGS is like stepping into a time machine and preferably going back to the mid 70s when psychedelic influences were somewhat ubiquitous. Yes, PINK FLOYD comes to mind, however, perhaps you should minus the profundity of PINK FLOYD’S sound because THE FLOWER KINGS are a quirky bunch. The introductory song, ‘Numbers’, lasts for as long as 25 minutes and it is quite a mundane listen. Other songs that follow are ‘For The Love of Gold’ and ‘Pandemonium’; chaotic organs splash amidst the whirring of banshee guitars ranging from different tempos and riffs; their melodies change often and erratically as if their music can’t quite grasp a satisfactory crescendo. It is interesting how they experiment with their structures and it’s quite obvious that they often improvise in the studio as if it’s like some raw band practice. THE FLOWER KINGS are for those who like their progressive rock heavily influenced by certain nostalgias from the aforementioned era.

Conclusion: Almost inaccessible for the majority, those who listen to progressive rock may still find this band a hard listen but essentially, I think it’s for those who embrace the era they pay homage to and most importantly, it’s for those who have a damn fine attention span.
