STONUS from Cyprus are one of those bands that constantly balance between Hard Rock and Stoner Rock and sound-wise that is very interesting. There are many bands that delve into Desert Rock and/or Psychedelic spheres that either lack convincing songwriting or a holistic performance, STONUS don’t have this handicap. I could write books about what I think is the perfect guitar sound for any given genre, the riffs and rhythms provided by Pavlos Demetriou and Nicky Ray are among those that I really like, the efficient and partially even subtle play of drummer Kotsios Demetriades is as essential to the overall sound as the vocals of Kyriacos Frangoulis. I reviewed their debut full-length in 2020 and I am honoured to have the opportunity to do this here. I honestly think that sound and quality-wise this may be one of the Hard Rock / Stoner Bands of the future, part of the spearhead so to say. It is worth to mention that the whole three song EP was recorded entirely analogue, the overall sound is very warm and organic and I can definitely say that this is very good for the vocals (at least in this case here).
Conclusion: If you dig KYUSS, MONSTER MAGNET and QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE you don’t want to miss your ‘Séance’ with STONUS.
