Review Flash

If you like it raw, brutal and rather fast there is not much better than an old Death Metal demo to start your evening. OBSIDIAN from Modesto, California formed in the year 2000, 2003 saw the band’s debut EP ‘Enslaved by Nightmares’ which is now online at Bandcamp for every dedicated headbanger to indulge into. This is, of course, a remastered version of the 2006 EP (sound-wise this was more a demo than an EP, that issue is fixed). When it comes to the overall sound these guys are playing now that they re-united under the new name OBSIDIAN RESURRECTION (fitting!) is an interesting mixture of melodic Death Metal and Black Metal. The vocals are a mix of growls and Black Metal screams which is one of the more outstanding features of the three compositions, the second thing that is rather special to me is the sound of the keyboard. The mix of raw drums and riffs at the speed of light with brutal vocals and theatrical keyboard pieces is very distinctive yet still a bit chaotic. I really think this could be the first steps towards something unique.

Conclusion: If you like DIMMU BORGIR and MORBID ANGEL this could be a nice surprise for you.
