Album Review
BENEATH THE MASSACRE is a Canadian Technical Death Metal band, formed in 2004. Their debut record ‘Evidence of Inequity’ (2005) was followed by works like ‘Mechanics of Dysfunction’ (2007) or the most recent, fourth record ‘Incongruous’ (2012). Their style can be best described as Technical Death Metal with influences from Hardcore and Grindcore. With ‘Incongruous’, BENEATH THE MASSACRE are pushing speed and technical guitar work to the limit - blastbeats, breakdowns and harsh vocals accompany incredibly fast guitar passages. The amount of notes played throughout the eleven songs might suffice to create a whole discography at an average speed.
No song is longer than four minutes and they all veer into each other without making much of a difference - everything sounds pretty brutal, monotonous and harsh, whilst the guitar solos and shredding provide certain melodies. Yet, one fails to grasp a certain structure or reoccurring motives; maybe, a certain relation to chaos is intended, but listening to this kind of music gets quite difficult and annoying after a while if everything sounds so extremely alike. The technical and musical abilities are definitely worth respect and recognition, but their style is very special and reducing music to extreme speed and guitar work may not allure to a very stable audience.
