From the beautiful town of Limburg in South Germany comes BERNSTEIN. The project comprises of the three musicians Jens Eufinger, Frank Weiß and Dirk Eufinger who are already making music together for several years in which they already worked on songs and now they’re presenting the first album ‘Lichtwärts’ produced with the help of José-Alvarez Brill.
‘Lichtwärts’ starts with the track ‘Das Meer’ lulling you in with its melancholy and calmness. You will probably notice the melancholy being a comrade of BERNSTEIN for it steeps through the whole album like a thread. The song also gives me the impression to listen to Herbert Grönemeyer. It’s the way Jens is performing the vocals. ‘Paradies’ is at the same time the single harbinger preceding the album and it tells a story about creating imaginary dream-worlds obviously being the fundament of a relationship. While the verse parts get along with some light drums and piano lines, the chorus turns out to be a universe of melody.
BERNSTEIN also provide something more on their debut than slower wistful balladry tunes and so, ‘Siebenmeilenstiefel’ is an actual straight club track and ‘In 80 Tagen um die Welt’ plays with the alternation of calm and driving parts. ‘Will nur wissen’ is again a slow-motion song regarding the tempo and Jens joins with a female vocalist here who also appears on the song ‘Home’ which can convince with a balanced use of German and English lyrics.
Even though some of the tracks sound kind of cheesy, the album has several beautiful moments as well and the production is top notch all the way. This album is a technically very matured and solid debut that will surely find many listeners.
