With ‘Ion’, the cult project THE ETERNAL AFFLICT, who created the club evergreen ‘San Diego’, released its seventh album in June 2009. It is opened by the King God himself, the ‘Rex Deus’ marked by a sparkling melody guiding through distorted patterns and jagged synth gadgetry. ‘Hatelove’ gives birth to threatening moods with buzzing synth layers, leading over to old-school electronic rhythms setting the tone for the track throwing in raging spoken word vocal delivery for good measure. ’23 Seconds of Fame’ is introduced with a twisted, horror nursery melody diving into cavernous synthetic environments out of which a creepy voice raises. A beat hooks up at about 2 minutes into the track giving some order to the chaos. Quite an interesting way of building up a track isn’t it?
’Suicide Kingdom’ builds from an ambient collage infused with speech samples to an attack on the dance floors, bringing together cutting-edge electronic beats and wide-range string arrangements. ‘Who Cries First’ with its distorted beats reminds me a bit of an AGONOIZE track, not in terms of the lyrics of course. It’s the cold and harsh rhythm that’s doing it. The patterns are sometimes quite similar to the ones of the other formation. The limited edition of the album holds a bonus CD called ‘2md Ion’ comprising remixes, unreleased material and a supposedly new instrumental track with the name ‘Rise and Fall’. It’s a very melodious and harmonic down-tempo track featuring lovely piano lines as well. ’Ion’ offers much diversified songwriting, deep lyrics but doesn’t become to mind focussed and will please club addicts as well.
