Album Review

Wistful chanting begins this most unusual of albums, with fabulous discordant flutes and instruments from pretty much every continent coming into play. It's a great opening opus and leads beautifully onto 'Coalesce part I' which slams a hard hitting metal refrain with some exquisite riffs and rabid drumming. This interestingly titled '64 A.D' comes next, very fast, very tight and lacking nothing in terms of how heavy it is. Searing violins screech behind the dramatic vocal which changes tempo effortlessly. 'The Navidson record' is much the same in terms of being perfectly executed but the aggressive metal intro gives way to a quieter melody that  infuses great metal guitar riffs with acoustic guitars and pianos. The whispered vocal is excellent although the track is so good without it it's almost superfluous.

A military-esque drum fields us into 'Elysian Fields', with a very heavy prog feel to it, blending metal and what sounds like a 1970's Curved Air solo together to produce one of the most compelling tracks on the album. 'The temptation chronicles' has what sounds like a rain storm going on whilst a string quartet argue over the top of it before a yearning vocal whispers and pleads it's way to your attention. Without a doubt this is the best track on the album, especially nice if you like things not of the main stream. 'What are you seeing on your fork?' surely a must for all you vegetarian's out there, is for me the weak spot of the album being more screamingly mainstream than anything else on the disc, but it's still very, very good. 'Uncontamined ' is much like the previous track except some manic violins lift it substantially and it's another great creation.

'Towers of silence' is another gem of a song; harmonics a plenty pepper the intro from some very nifty acoustic guitar playing leaving you in no doubt as to the worth of these musicians, whose influences are so, so broad. The album title track 'A bare reminiscence of infected wonderlands' is another track touched by the hand of some passing god, being irregular, symphonic and utterly beautiful. This band is so tight, so accomplished and so inventive that it's shocking. 'Coalesce part II' is soft and lovely, the refrain ambling gently sad across your consciousness. Kate Bush like piano does marry crying guitars, whilst all the time the hard edge of metal threatens to slice through like a knife. It's an awesome end to an awesome album, one of the best I've ever heard. I played this album three times straight it was so good, certainly one to catch if you possibly can.
