CAPTAIN’S DIARY is the moniker German singer/songwriter Sebastian Müller has chosen to work under many years ago to spread his stories. ‘Niemals jedem recht’ is his third album as CAPTAIN’S DIARY wherein he dresses own or foreign experiences in acoustics. In the further course of the album it strikes you that Sebastian’s celebrating melancholy in a very own way. It is clear and unfiltered, yet it’s not without its very own idiosyncrasies, and a little enigmatic it proves to be as well sometimes. So now we head on to explore a bit of the music included on ‘Niemals jedem recht’ and what could be better than starting with the opener ‘Augen auf’, gazing backwards into the past and an autumnal grey sky.
A wonderfully moody piece to begin with, while on ‘Du weißt hier gar nichts mehr genau’ it’s all wrapped up in a little more rhythm. ‘Komma’ has grown on me a lot since I first listened to it. It’s simply beautiful, crystal in delivery and with a little bit of a rehearsal room atmosphere. The title track gives musical expression to following one’s own path even if the whole world is against it and you might stumble or fall several times on the way. Last but not least I’ve chosen ‘Happy End/Pretend’ drifting forth on a sea of low-key moods and subtly propelled by a muffled rhythm it is indeed like swimming in a never-ending sea. In a time where overrated pop stars lend their voices to over produced pop songs it is delightful to see someone dwelling on the virtues of acoustic simplicity and beauty like Sebastian Müller’s project CAPTAIN’S DIARY. Recommended!
