Album Review
The debut album of Finnish industrial rock band COLD COLD GROUND, entitled ‘This Side of Depravity’, proves that the formation plays “noisy rock music” and maybe, even interesting one but after the first listening the material seems to be mostly a mixture of separate tracks. Of course, they all are well-done yet don’t produce an impression of something complete. If we dig a bit deeper or listen further then we may notice the same stuff within a song: expressive, vigorous melodies don’t accord somehow with the vocals. The singing is definitely good and professional but it surprisingly conflict with the music or a listener just needs some time to get used to the sound.
The album contains only 10 tracks yet it’s hard to listen to the whole thing at once. The songs aren’t too long or too boring moreover they are quite versatile but still very leisured despite the power of the guitars and great arrangements. However it would be unfair to say that on the album there are no songs able to impress immediately and for a long time. The opening piece is one of them making you think that the rest of the material is equally good. Well, maybe it really is but everything depends on a listener. So the other intricate compositions are ‘Warden’ and ‘DIYM’ and the final song as well deserves some attention. All in all the release is neither good no bad. It’s obvious that the musicians tried their best and the quality of the record is excellent but among the number of similar albums of similar projects it’s hard to mark this one out. On the other hand fans of COLD COLD GROUND and the genre in general will find ‘This Side of Depravity’ interesting for themselves.
