GOREMENT was a Swedish Death Metal band, formed in 1989 that continued from the mid 90s onwards under the name Pipers Dawn with a different musical style and a female singer. GOREMENT released several promos until 1995 and one full-length record, entitled ‘The Ending Quest’ in 1994. Since those were put out under a small label that went bankrupt, those were rare to find and many bootlegs were spread. In 2012, the complete work of the early years was released under the name ‘Within The Shadows Of Darkness – The Complete Recordings’. Like their landsmen EVOCATION, who also released demos under Century Media, the original material was re-mastered by using the original tapes. The two CD-Compilation includes the complete ‘The Ending Quest’, the second disk includes the demo material as well as four previously unreleased live tracks.
In general, the sound of the album is very authentic, the production is clear but does not take away the rough character of the songs. The style is very traditional Old School Death Metal, the riffs are often disharmonic and fast, but also slower, down-tempo parts are added. Lyrically, topics like death, gore and human failure seem to be covered, although the harsh and rough vocals are often not too easy to understand. The overall play time is almost two hours, so it is hard to pinpoint certain songs as highlights. The general mood of both CDs is very dark, evil and harsh, the way good Death Metal is supposed to be. Fans of the genre should definitely not miss out on this supreme release, and it can easily be argued that GOREMENT used to be underrated back then. The live tracks give an impression of the band’s live abilities and also underline the authenticity of the release. Definitely a highlight for Death Metal in 2012.
