Album Review

THE HAUNTED is a Swedish Death/ Thrash Metal band, founded in 1996. With ‘Exit Wounds’, the band has released their eighth studio record, following up on works like ‘Unseen’ (2011) and ‘Versus’ (2008). In contrast to their previous works, THE HAUNTED take on a more straight-forward and harsh approach on ‘Exit Wounds’, which most likely relates to their recent line-up changes and Marco Aro’s return at vocals. Except for some slightly melodic parts on tracks like ‘Psychonaut’ or ‘Time Will Not Heal’, the overall mood on ‘Exit Wounds’ is aggressive, harsh and monotonous. In comparison to their previous work, the band has retreated from experiments and has returned to a more basic, riff-dominated style. This is presented on 14 overall grooving and fast songs, which show rather little variation between them. Although the quality of the songs is good and fans of their early years might really appreciate their modern interpretation of rather basic Death/ Thrash Metal, a little more innovation, technical as well as structure-related experiments would have given this album a more sophisticated outcome.
