Album Review

The idea for a new band came up when two of the later band members got drunk on a festival and talked riffs and the result is the new back. The line-up grew rapidly and in its current incarnation consists of five members in total. All of them are no newbies and were involved in several other projects and bands and now after several months of work, ‘The New Black’ will be releasing their self-titled debut on 23rd January.

‘Everlasting’ provides the album with a catchy and highly melodic opening track commencing with a short twin lead riff as fast accentuated drum beats start their attack shortly after and singer Fludid comes in with his vocals that are shifting between the poles of  roaring, screaming and cleaner parts. When ‘Why I Burn’ approaches it’s getting plainly obvious these guys are also capable of celebrating a harder-edged rock style. The drums are relentless, decorated with nicely down-tuned and wailing riffs and crunchy solos making it insanely clear that some pros are at work here ‘More than a Man’ comes with a first line namely “We can only wake up guilty, if we ever fall asleep”. Well, that line seems to have musically transcended into the track as it leaves you no time to get tired, actually. A fierce storm of speedy rum gallops and pithy, and by turns harsh and melodic guitar melodies sweeps over to you and after a short break with underlined live applause follows one extremely cool twin solo.

Now, let’s take a short trip into the southwest of America, or into the Wild Wild West. Actually that song sounds partly like from a Western with the harmonica lines played over these distinct acoustic guitar parts at the beginning. Later the song’s building into one proper rock track, but it’s definitely South-Western style to me. With the next song, the lads are showing you ’50 Ways to Love your Liver’. That organ introduction doesn’t give away anything of what’s being unchained some time. Guitar layers build up one by one and then drums press fiercely forward. Fludid’s chant on this one’s significantly harder, mixing in screams and damn harsh shouts as well. That song should be called ‘50 ways to kick some asses’, while there’s actually only one real one: Play this song on a party. We’re going to approach the end with ‘Wound’ with a pervasive acoustic section over which Fludid lays his quite mellow vocals, his best singing performance on the album if you ask me. About halfway through the song it’s merging in a powerful instrumental part with a stunning solo.

If you like honest and diverse rock, there’s likely no way around THE NEW BLACK and their self-titled debut. These guys know their craft and bring you a fine rock record that’s worth a buy.
