Italian outfit NOCTIFLORA came to my attention last year when releasing their retrospective collection ‘04/07’! Their newest release, the EP ‘The Magic Drone’, which has just surfaced on 18th May is described as “…the obscure sound of the unconscious.” Whose first act ‘Drone1’ sets off with a piercing scream to subsequently flow down into depths of melancholy. One thinks to hear some old THE CURE shimmering through the bass and guitar licks pieced surrounded by synth atmospherics and pieced atop a slow rhythm base. Somewhere later along the path plaintive vocals appear and a good minute before its end the track undergoes a speed-up that takes some of the deep melancholy bits away from the atmosphere and gives prominence to a more rocking style.
‘Corvi Metafisici’ bases on precise drumming and while this time doing without vocals you can enjoy an intense guitar/bass performance with some synth sparkles added. ‘Plastic Fun’ plays with processed bass lines and later covers your senses with a wide, melancholic pad sound. Crossing the verge to the songs second half we can hear it turning to a merely acoustic, balladry kind of song with a dash of synth and vocals. The drum section on ‘Defend’ is pretty strong and loud in the mix while the impressing interconnecting guitar and bass gadgetry stands a little behind. ‘Mental’ is the end of this “…travel of Arios through music and nature.” Featuring a drum section that is undoubtedly the best of what has been presented on this EP putting together elaborate electronic and natural drumming. Real cool!
‘The Magic Drone’ with its mainly grey moods can be heard best at night or in autumn when the intensity of the songs can unfold its full potential. For people still appreciating the classic Dark Wave sound it’s a definitive must have.
