Album Review

MAGNETIC MAN (MM) is a project of three DJs, Skream, Benga and Artwork, performing with three computers, one of the DJ’s is in charge of drums and loops, another of bass lines and the third plays lead sounds and samples, there are several invited female vocalists featuring also. During their live shows which introduced them to many Dubstep fans across the club scenes they also impress with artwork and spinning kinetic images.

The first ‘Flying Into Tokyo’ is a favourite for me, moody and contemplative track, the string parts are beautiful, give it character and together with the piano played repetitively as if rain was falling gently or an old clock was soothingly ticking creating a welcomed presence and contrast. It’s not your typical club number so it feels as an intro to the album. Second song ‘Fire’ assimilates funky and (skunk) reggae influences into MAGNETIC MAN creation with great effect. The darker minor key position of music shifts up and with simple lyrics sung by a light vocal in ‘I Need Air’ are some of the elements of the song that pushed Dubstep and MM trio further into prominence.

From the vocalised tracks and in fact out of all the tracks I like it the least, not only because it will not grab me at all I find myself begrudging its duration. It steps behind Dubstep towards the more typical club music and is more mainstream radio-friendly. The samples are used succinctly especially in ‘The Bug’. ‘Box of Ghosts’ is another track that stands out to me, the bass defines the song superbly, and the loops are great, very well layered, gentle and atmospheric. ‘Getting Nowhere’ reminds me of MOBY with the vocal, an evocative track with a tinge of enjoyable melancholy.

It’s an album that will be definitely appreciated by Dubstep lovers and enrich club experience for many. If you’re outside of the scene and the genre is not exactly your thing, you’ll still enjoy some parts of it, worth a listen at least then.
