Album Review
LAST DAYS OF APRIL has been founded in 1996 by Karl Larsson and released their eponymous debut already in 1997. Through touring and playing various festivals like e.g. the Hurricane Festival they got exposed to a larger audience. In 2010, 3 years after their last album ‘Might As Well Live’ came out, ‘Gooey’ saw its release in November. I might be wrong, but I think that I’ve heard the melody arrangement of the opener ‘No Time For Dreams’ somewhere before. Could almost whistle along to it from the start! The lightly melancholic song develops rocking traits over its small duration. ‘I Think You’re Everything’ begins in a rocky way yet drifts off to become a little pop gem. ‘I Can’t Control It’ builds up some more pressure initially through the use of more forceful drums. When flowing out of the chorus, however, it’s maintaining an air of wistfulness. For ‘All The Same’, Larsson has employed the vocal talents of Evan Dando, who’s been the founding member of THE LEMONHEADS. for a mostly acoustic song he’s lending his voluminous timbre to.
The intro sequence to ‘Why So Hasty?’ must be reminiscence to THE WHO’s ‘Baba O’Riley’, or so I thought when hearing it for the first time. Those electronic elements eventually disperse to make way for the trademark melancholic indie sound. ‘Forget About It’ is a really driven track, driven by racing drums and a folky atmosphere that adds a nice diversion. Second and last guest vocalist for ‘Gooey’ is Tegan Quinn, usually a part of the twin band TEGAN AND SARA. The track’s entirely based on wide keys and both Larsson and Quin deliver a performance here that leaves no room for complains. The overall mood of ‘Gooey’ is very calm and contemplative, even if there’s an outbreak here and there. Nevertheless, Larsson and the band manage to inject just enough to not make it a tedious effort but an enjoyable collection of songs.
