Album Review

The Swedish band was formed in 2004 and released their debut record ‘Onwards’ in 2006. Now, they will release their second album, entitled ‘The Road Less Travelled’.

The album starts with an atmospheric intro, called ‘Ignition’, which begins with atmospheric elements but then starts the engine, soon to veer over towards ‘Driven’. Singer Ida provides powerful, clean vocals which are fittingly underlined by fast guitar moves. ‘Human Condition’ is situated in the mid-tempo region and is dominated by Ida’s voice, which also seems to carry some additional effects. In the middle, a harmonic and neat guitar solo is included, which shows the musicians qualities as well. The following ‘Death of Jane Doe’ surprises with a fast, heavy riff, which is later on to be found again, but the whole song is mostly at normal pace. Somehow, the vocals are mainly underlined by a not too fast backdrop. The focus is put upon the lyrics.

‘Marionette’ is a heavier song with a soft but dark mood, definitely putting forward a nice variety and showing that also deeper and not too strong vocals can sound pleasantly. The title track continues in this more pensive direction but without losing power or uniqueness. Number seven, ‘The Anger and The Silent Remorse’, is also not too fast and heavy. Maybe the band should have chosen a different track listing, because putting similar sounding songs in a row can get a bit boring every now and then. ‘21’ finally puts up speed but without losing the usual trademarks. As expected, ‘Worlds Apart’ is also faster and a typical power metal song.

‘The Road Less Travelled’ ends with ‘The Last Haven’, which combines all previous elements and remarks an adequate conclusion. All in all, ‘The Road Less Travelled’ is a nice album, having its ups and downs, at times being too repetitive (due to putting similar sounding songs next to each other) and very vocal-dominated. Still, fans of power metal make no mistake by giving this band a try.
