Album Review

SILENT DISGUISE is a group from Croydon, England that performs hard rock and modern metal. The group has been together since 2008 and has been stunning listeners with their high energy, good looks, and the ability to create a sound that is unique and doesn’t sound like fifteen other bands. They released their first EP, ‘New Heights’, in late 2008, which literally lived up to its name as it gave SILENT DISGUISE a new fan base, followed by extensive touring. Now, they’ve released another EP and it completely trumps the first one, in both complexity and musical diversity. The band also made sure to be able to spread their release world-wide so an even bigger fan base can be granted, and their music is much more accessible.

The ‘Blueprints’ EP is short, but extensively sweet. If one was combining FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH and BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE - that is the way to describe SILENT DISGUISE’s sound on their latest album. ‘Save You’ is the first track and features a very steady hard rock chug and clean vocals that are a mix between Maynard of TOOL and Ivan of FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH. Blended together it is a distinct voice, and the backing shouts also make the music more unique. Musically the riffs seem pretty standard, but melodic, and fortunately the band doesn’t always just use chords and riffs; during the bridge there’s a soft melodic string picking that really adds to the depth of the track. ‘Blueprints’ is the softest track on the album, featuring female guest vocals that really complement the male ones. The guitars are absolutely beautiful with their simple, but effective notes. Add in the tap of the drums and even a haunting keyboard section and this is truly some melodic modern metal.

‘Only By Night’ cranks up the intensity by mixing the clean vocals with some screams and growls. Similar to the first track, it offers a mid paced melodic complexion of riffs and chords, followed by a break of softer notes from the guitars, but the song is quite a bit more electrifying due to added distortion. Finally, the album closes with ‘20 Stories’ which is the hardest track on the album. There’s a good balance of screaming and singing here, with lots of backing vocals to create a hard rock symphony, adding some hardcore influences with the music. This is definitely drawing some influence from FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH, but SILENT DISGUISE do their best to only sound similar in riffs, not in vocals or lyrical content. The snarls and screams are more in the black metal vein than hardcore, which definitely sets apart the two bands. Throw in the heavy, crushing last verse / outro musical structure and this monster track is an excellent closer.

Concerning ‘Blueprints’, SILENT DISGUISE is like a seventeen year old winning a Wimbledon Grand Slam. They’ve accomplished something huge, will go on to bigger things such as getting promotions, sponsors, and have all the time in the world to dominate over and over (with future albums and hits rather than matches and trophies, that is). Hopefully a label will grab them soon as their debut full length album should be eagerly anticipated.
