SIMON SAYS NO! is a band from Norway, which started out as a two-piece band of Simon and Ruben Nesse, after changing a line up they’ve took on a bass player and a drummer, but Simon left after three years (just as well I think). They blend Shoegaze with Indie Rock and I’m sorry to say that this fusion doesn’t work at all in this case. Sure to their record company it may have sounded interesting and maybe they thought it’s like post-modern art that bets its pull on incomprehensibility - but there is no method to this madness, no beauty and no challenge to it! It’s interesting as a bad hangover, a gallery of sharp sounds in an order that doesn’t make sense and hurts all your musical sensibilities. It can’t even pose as experimental or fresh, it’s simply a torture to sit through it and listen to it.
Damn, even my neighbour’s assembly of mating cats sound better than this, even her endless lighting up of joints with an inadequate lighter under my windows is less disturbing! I can assure you if I wasn’t reviewing it, I’d not even sit through the first song, let alone the whole album. When they try to sound as JOY DIVISION in fourth song ‘See Me Through’ I have to clench my fists and grind my teeth. It’s one of the worst albums I’ve ever had to listen to, even the bad ones in retrospect sound as masterpieces!!! If there’s ever any sign showing anything that sounds remotely good, it very soon gets absolutely smashed back into the terrible nonsensical cacophony of it all. The only good thing about this album is that it has an end. Phew! I’ve rated its music at two and that’s being over-generous...
