Review Flash

A bit of a super-group (it says here) who will astonish you with their decadent mix of classic styles ranging from the 70s to the 90s (it also says here), THE JOKE JAY are actually something of a wet fart, squelching unenthusiastically around more musical genres than is healthy and nailing none of them. Big single ‘Awaken’ drags on for a decade, like a yawn where your jaw has got stuck. Sticking a cover of DAVID BOWIE’s ‘Moonage Daydream’ as track number two is either arrogant or foolish, especially when it’s such a poor imitation of a fairly untouchable classic. There are songs that like to use the word “fuck”, there is plenty of largely tuneless electro-stomping, the yearning to be Bowie pops up repeatedly, even mimicking badly his vocal style on ‘Hello Mother Earth’, and - of course - like all the very best of endurance test albums, it’s a bloody double.

Conclusion: Even with a most charitable head on, this is pretty bland and pointless stuff, strutting about like a peacock that doesn’t know it’s bald.
