To this day, when hearing or reading about Costa Rica I always thought about the islands that housed the Jurassic Park facilities in the Movies, well now I know there is also nice Thrash Metal that hails from these latitudes. The band is around since 2008 and hails from San José, Costa Rica they merged with the band INHALER in 2013 and decided to keep the name HÖWLER. ‘Descendants Of Evil’ is the band’s fourth full-length album to date. The lyrical themes are pretty old-school for the Thrash Metal subgenre: humanity, society and generally shit that hits the fan. The approach is more melodic than loads of modern Thrash bands which suits me just fine as I really dig some melody most of the time (if not I sometimes rather listen to Death Metal to just get all the hate out of my system). If I’d be pressed to compare the sound to other bands I would mention ELM STREET, ANTHRAX, HERESY or ZYANIDE. From the sound and overall feel of ‘Descendants Of Evil’ this is an album that could have been made in 1986 and that is what I really dig about this, just put it into a playlist with Thrash Metal from the glory days and no one will notice. If I weren’t hungover as fuck at the moment, I would elaborate on how thirsty for a beer this is making me but at the moment the urge to get a cold one is subdued by a headache the size of Texas.
Conclusion: If you dig music to party, drink and kick ass to, you are in for a fucking treat.
