Finally one of the most odd and gloriously epic Heavy Metal bands is back. To say that these guys just play Heavy Metal is an understatement, the music these guys assemble is a mix of RUSH’s upbeat progressive musical witchcraft, IRONFLAME’s bow to the NWOBHM while managing to excel in their own individuality and THE LORD WEIRD SLOUGH FEG’s lovely strangeness. These guys always cite their favourite books and movies in their tracks, which something’s makes for good songs and sometimes create utter masterpieces (a thing they have in common with IRON MAIDEN). I did like the last endeavour ‘Rip Time’ but as fan boys as it sounds the first track of ‘Showdown’ which is ‘Fortune and Glory’ eats most of the last albums tracks for breakfast, I caught myself just listening to it twice in a row (normally I seldom do that during a reviewing session) and even singing along to it because it is so damn catchy.
The song-writing on tracks like ‘Outrun Infinity’, ‘Grab The Sun’ and ‘Fortune and Glory’ goes damn hard, the tracks are long , very melodic and rich in atmosphere and storytelling so much so that there is literally nothing to criticize. Sean Buchanan’s vocals and this has to be stated, are as important to the bands signature sound as the moon is needed for the tide. Aside from that the riffs and leads from Bill Fischer and Chris Millard kick asses left and right. When it comes to the fabulous rhythm section that is bass man Anthony Micale and drummer Doza Mendoza, I have to exclaim that I love the mix of ‘Showdown’ because I can hear two guitars AND the bass! But let’s not forget the mastery that is Doza’s clockwork drumming. All in all this is just a band that exudes fun and a love for their craft that is refreshing and live-giving to this old man here. All musicians involved just play their asses off, creating an album that will surely land in my top 20 of the year. All hail the MEGA COLOSSUS!
