EP Review
BROKEN EGO is a new Austrian band created by Chris Ego and ‘Love & Decay In 16 Bits’ is his debut album. Musically speaking, the sound of the band is closely related to the NINE INCH NAILS yet you can trace some other influences most notable by IAMX. The album though is not a concept one; it is closely related with the story of Pygmalion, a hero depicted here negatively. The vocals of Chris Ego underline this specific element as they make the protagonist kinda weirdo, of the kind you have to phone the police to get rid of him. Yet overall what is obvious is that the CD is uneven. Truth to be told though the band has the necessary dynamics in order to present a cool live gig yet on the level of the CD recording, there’s uncertainty in the acoustic levels and the mixing. As it seems Chris Ego did everything by himself whereas a more collaborative mood would bring better results. ‘I Want You Back’ is probably the best song of the EP, where everything works as it should be. Interesting CD but personally speaking I’d prefer to listen to the live version of it.
