EVOCATION are a Swedish Death Metal band, founded in 1991,dissembled in 1993 and reassembled in 2005. Their three studio releases are highly acclaimed and established the band as one of the most important ones in the genre. Their demo records from 1992 were, until now, never made available to a broader audience and the release of ‘Evoked From Demonic Depths – The Early Years’ has been due for a while. It includes the demos ‘The Ancient Gate’ and a promo tape from 1992 as well as four rehearsal tracks and one previously unreleased title from that very year. The CD booklet also includes background information on the band and its history.
All tracks have been re-mastered by using the original tapes, but sticking to the original style and atmosphere of the songs – the songs still sound very rough and have their very own mood. Songs like ‘Through The Darkened Peril’ or ‘Desolated Spirits’ combine slow, saggy riffs with speedy drums, lots of changes in rhythm but also melodic tendencies. ‘On A Journey To Heaven’ incorporates a very catchy and remarkable opening phrase – the song structure is very fast and almost chaotic, yet harmonic phrases and guitar tunes stick out and allow the listener to follow quite easily. In general, the songs are very interesting to listen to, since the history and changes of EVOCATION’s music are made audible. The mastering is done very well but thoroughly, the four rehearsal tracks give another insight into the 1992s and also visualize the development of the band’s abilities. Fans of Old School Death Metal in particular should not miss this unique opportunity and definitely check ‘Evoked From Demonic Depths – The Early Years’ out.
