Album Review
The dark ambient project ACOMPLICE AFFAIR has been founded in February 2005 by Poland based musician Przemyslaw Rychlik. First material was already recorded in April 2006 and in December of the same year; the Israeli label The Eastern Front released the first album ‘Act of Creation’.
There’s a lot of ambient music being released these days. Actually it’s getting flooded with new artists, but not everyone is able to keep the attention over the complete length of an album, so let’s see if this Polish project is able to accomplish that task. The disc invites the listener in with ‘Pomiedzy mgta’, a menacingly appearing sound construction, building up a strong tension right from the start by unleashing a deep drone which is encompassed by stretched layers and a whispering voice. With the second track ‘Wewnatrz wspomnién’, we can experience the introduction of orchestral choirs into the sound, bound by various sorts of field recordings and strange noises at the same time ghostly and intriguing.
Unfortunately the following tracks can’t keep up that strong mood at all, pursuing a fairly different path in exploring rather psychedelic elements with small dark overtones such as the heart-piercing screams in ‘Mrozny’, a far too long track; it’s getting pretty tedious to be honest. A more compact arrangement would have been more beneficial for the track. Bit to be fair some of the tracks have other qualities. ‘Tam sa wierzby placzace’ for example incorporates drums, though I’m not able to determine, whether they’re real or programmed. Either way the whole track opts for a more experimental approach and cuts a very fine figure, just like the title track ‘Zatopione lzy ludskoscl’ that turns out to be even a bit more experimental in terms of the structure.
The album has two major flaws for me. First one: The tracks don’t appear as a cohesive body of work. Just like various tracks thrown onto a disc. I don’t see the well-known golden thread. If you take a look at the tracks individually, there are some good tracks to be found. Another thing is the mostly mediocre recording quality of the songs, being dull altogether and not crystal clear as they should be, especially when you want to produce ambient music.
